Product description

A group of friends join the military to become Starship troopers and prepare for an interstellar war with an alien bug race.

The Complete Campaigns is a four-disc compilation of the Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles series that was originally released on eight DVDs: The Pluto Campaign, The Hydora Campaign, The Tophet Campaign, The Tesca Campaign, The Zephyr Campaign, The Klendathu Campaign, Trackers (including the four bonus episodes), and The Homefront Campaign. While Paul Verhoeven's dark, satirical adaptation of Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers seriously strayed from the novel, this Verhoeven-produced TV series--part sequel, part remake, all CGI animated--hews closer to the spirit of the novel, a space-age twist on a World War II battle adventure. Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles is a series of military skirmishes and assignments on a variety of fronts, such as Bug City, water-dominated Hydora, the desert planet Tophet, the jungle planet Tesca, fiery Klendathu, and good old Earth.

The episodic nature works perfectly within this framework, and the mix of Marine grit ("No retreat, no surrender!"), military jargon, and understated melodrama give a feel somewhere between the steely seriousness of an old-fashioned war comic book and the spectacle and romance of a Japanese anime space opera. The CGI animation is less ambitious than in such feature films as Toy Story, but it's one of the most impressive examples of the animation made for TV. The detailed designs, rich textures, 3-D modeling, and awesome sense of scale (not to mention the pumped-up action and whiplash speed of the bug army) give it the look of an impossibly sophisticated video game, with the rat-a-tat editing and soaring camerawork of a Hollywood movie. The budgetary shortcuts are evident in moments of blurring and jerking, but overall it's startlingly effective. The PG-level violence may not be appropriate for younger viewers, but it's aimed at an older crowd and has won a loyal adult following.

The packaging is very convenient (a shelf-space-friendly four discs in Thinpaks), but unfortunately, serious Roughnecks fans will want to hold onto their old discs. Cramming the eight discs of content plus bonus episodes (granted, Trackers was a short disc) onto four single-sided discs apparently left no room for the producer/technical commentary tracks that accompanied most of the previous discs. The only bonus features are photo galleries and a fold-out illustration. --Sean Axmaker, David Horiuchi

« very entertaining »
the voice acting and storylines were all good (except for "trackers," but the series' creators were having issues at that time). very adult ideas and themes. i was 28 when viewing it for the first time and loved it.

« Roughnecks - Great for Sci-fi and Starship Troopers fans »
Roughnecks is a 4-disc collection that was run from 1999 to 2000. It's loosely-based on Robert Heinlein's book "Starship Troopers" and was produced by Paul Verhoeven (the same guy who did the movie "Starship Troopers" and "Starship Troopers 3: Marauder"). The series is set around campaigns, with 2 campaigns per disc and is 1990's-quality CGI (that is, it was great for the times, but looks somewhat campy now). The story follows the exploits of John Rico and Razak's Roughnecks, a unit of SICON's Mobile Infantry. The Roughnecks tends to follow Heinlein's book more closely than the movie and the stories are VERY engaging with excellent character development. The action scenes seem to be clearly developed for the Saturday morning audiance, with the only thing you ever see getting killed in combat are the bugs. There are some scenes that are recycled, but you get to see the various Arachnid bio-forms and their "allies" the Skinnies. IMHO, it appears that Verheoven wanted this to be his vision of the book instead of the movie.

You won't find Johnny Rico's exploits through boot camp until later in the series; with the introduction dropping you straight into the action with the Pluto Campaign. Here. the MI has been brought in to clear out the Arachnids after a previously-failed attempt (called 'Operation: Pest Control', or OPC for short) causes SICON (the Strategically Integrated Coalition of Nations) to re-evaluate their tactics. All the characters from the 1997 movie are here, albeit in different form (for example, Carl Jenkins serces as a psychic attatched to the Roughnecks to help locate bugs). In a later episode, Career Sergeant Zimm returns, who was played in the movie by Clancy Brown; and who voices the Roughnecks' version of his character from the movie.

All in all, this is an exciting collection to have. While the series tends to drag on in some segments, there is enough to keep most viewers and lovers of sci-fi entertained. Unfortunately, like the book itself, the series ends on a cliffhangar and there is no new information if this will be rectified or not. Don't let that discourage you from viewing this awesome and exciting series, that while campy and cheezy at times (it was made for kids, after all) has excellent content, stories, and memorable characters.

« Great Price »
I use to wake at 5:30 in the morning to watch this show. I saw this for a good three weeks and then they took it off the air. I never thought to look for it until I saw it at best buy. I would've bought it there but they had it priced at $100. That was about three years ago though. I loved the movie but don't expect it to be like the the movie; it based more off the book from what I'm told.

« Starship troopers chronicles great cartoon verision »
One of the first CGI cartoon verisions of a movie ( Starship Troopers). Great story, great special effects. Some ways better than the movie. Not for little kids.
